Overview of the Organization
The mission of the Global AIDS Interfaith Alliance (GAIA) is to provide basic health services, targeting prevention, care, and support in communities affected by HIV/AIDS, TB and malaria in Africa. GAIA’s vision is to be a preeminent, community-driven, highly effective organization enhancing the lives of the poorest people, by improving health care, economic conditions, and educational opportunities.  Our emphasis is on providing training and resources for marginalized communities devastated by HIV/AIDS and related illnesses which have few resources and limited access to other organizations.  

Position Summary

GAIA’s founding president, Bill Rankin, is retiring in the Fall of 2011. GAIA seeks a CEO who is committed to enhancing the lives of the poorest people by improving health care, educational, and economic opportunities.  The candidate should have vision and a proven track-record to lead GAIA through its next phase of growth.

The ideal candidate will have a passion for GAIA’s work, a strong appetite for learning, and the ability to inspire others to take a stake in GAIA’s mission.  S/he will have significant organizational development and management experience, exceptional communication skills, a successful track record of securing funding, and demonstrated experience organizing and executing complex international projects. The CEO will understand the importance of a ground-up, community-owned approach to international health work, and will respect the leadership role of the Malawian organization in program creation, implementation, and sustenance.  Leadership of, and enthusiasm for fundraising are essential.

The Following are the Major Job Functions and Responsibilities of the CEO

Accomplish Fundraising Objectives (40%):
·         Build GAIA’s budget to $6 million in the next four years through cultivation of individual donors, family and independent foundations, religious organizations, corporations, public grants/contracts and fundraising events
·         Collaborate with Development Director and Board of Directors to set fundraising goals
·         Identify and cultivate relationships with donors
·         Successfully identify and secure new fundraising opportunities
 Lead GAIA U.S. Operations (25%):
·         Provide leadership in developing organizational goals and monitoring progress toward them
·         Raise funds by expanding existing strong donor base and capturing new & diverse funding sources
·         Develop, execute, and monitor credible, high-quality programs and services
·         Manage human resources for organizational strength and optimal performance
·         Manage financial resources and help establish operating budgets
·         Explore and evaluate new directions and opportunities for the organization
·         Cultivate successful working relationship already in place - University of California, San Francisco
 Oversee GAIA Malawi Operations (15%):
·         Support the leadership and expertise of the Malawi Country Director and senior Malawi staff in creating, sustaining, and continuously improving Malawi programs
·         Work collaboratively with the US and Malawi staff to ensure that key project outcomes are evaluated and leveraged for maximum impact
·         Provide guidance for the effective use of scientific expertise and research in activities designed to achieve program goals
·         Work with the International Programs Director and the Malawi Country Director to explore opportunities for program direction and expansion as they emerge
·         Monitor and direct the use of financial resources in Africa
 Promote GAIA Nationally and Internationally (10%):
·         Effectively interpret the African experience to the US GAIA community, and interpret US GAIA to African stakeholders
·         Drive efforts to ensure GAIA continues to be recognized as a leader in international health and development
·         Establish and maintain strong working relations with key stakeholders in the US and Africa
·         Represent the organization and its mission, philosophy, programs, and services through strong, positive images to stakeholders and the general public
·         Attend to significant developments and trends related to GAIA’s programs and monitor the physical, political, and policy environment
 Collaborate with the Board of Directors(10%):
·         Ensure the Board is fully informed about the organization
·         Assure the Board receives relevant information (including key metrics) that allow it to successfully complete fiduciary and policy setting responsibilities
·         Work with the Board to update, develop, and implement GAIA’s long-range strategic plan
·         Help identify new trustees who will sustain the organization’s growth and development
 Knowledge, Skills and Experience
·         Exceptional management and supervision skills including senior level management position(s) with non-profit, international organizations
·         Demonstrable track record of successfully identifying and securing new and existing project opportunities that further an organization’s vision and goals
·         Demonstrable track record of successfully identifying and securing new and existing fundraising opportunities that further an organization’s vision and goals.
·         Direct responsibility for fiscal oversight and management, including developing and managing budgets of at least $5 million
·         Excellent oral, public speaking, and written communication skills
·         Experience developing or strengthening infrastructure systems and procedures to support successful, sustainable growth
·         Experience with organizational and employee performance management best practices
·         Experience leading and executing large-scale, long-term international development projects impacting 20,000+ people
·         Direct experience working with a Board of Directors.
·         Working knowledge of international non-profit, health care, educational, and development issues
·         A track record of building partnerships with allied organizations, internationally, regionally, & locally
·         Able to identify, develop and maintain successful relationships with a variety of donors, including public and corporate donors, foundations, and individuals
·         Comfortable fundraising from diverse religious organizations. About 10% of GAIA’s support comes from faith-based organizations (mostly progressive churches interested in international issues)
 Requirements
·         Passionate belief in GAIA’s mission, vision and values and ability to impart that to others
·         A master’s degree, MPH, MD, PhD or other graduate degree preferred.
·         Minimum of 10 years direct experience in senior-level management positions; 3+ years with non-profit, international organizations highly preferred
·         Demonstrable track record of successfully raising monies from a range of funding sources
·         Experience directly managing a budget of at least $5 million
·         Experience directly managing a US staff of at least 10 and of working with international staff
·         Experience working in the developing world
·         Ability to travel both domestically and internationally (~25%)

The Workplace
Larkspur, Marin County (San Francisco), California USA. The position includes semi-frequent travel around the U.S. related to fund-raising, and yearly international travel to meet with program staff and visit projects. The job involves working in a fast-paced and demanding environment with the need to successfully balance multiple projects and responsibilities and to work closely with an exciting, diverse, and international workforce.  Some weekend and evening hours required. The position offers a competitive salary and benefits package, including health insurance, retirement savings, vacation, and sick leave. The CEO will report to the Board of Directors.
