Director, EU Office Client: The International Fund for Animal Welfare IFAW ( http://www.ifaw.org ) Reports To: Executive Vice President Location of Job: Brussels, Belgium
Purpose The position of Director, EU Office is a senior position within IFAW, reporting to the Executive Vice President and is accountable for the ongoing leadership and management of a fully integrated IFAW policy office. This is a unique opportunity to lead a strong policy and campaigning program for a top international animal welfare organization.
The Director provides ongoing executive leadership and management direction to all operational aspects within the EU office as well as strong coordination with IFAW’s international headquarters on Cape Cod, US. The position is accountable for providing leadership and overall direction to all functions within the IFAW EU Office including political activity, public support and public relations, fund development and administrative activities. Developing cohesive, effective project teams that bring together political, scientific and animal welfare expertise is an important component of the position. The position is also accountable for helping to achieve IFAW’s international campaign goals through the office’s policy work, for building strong relationships within the animal welfare and conservation communities, and for vigorous public outreach efforts.
The EU Office Director is a key public representative for IFAW´s projects and campaigns in the legislature, in the NGO community and in the media.
Accountabilities/Responsibilities Provide ongoing executive leadership and management direction for all aspects of the EU office including operations, political activity, public support, public affairs, finance, administration and human resources.
Provide strategic direction to IFAW’s EU programs in close coordination with IFAW Headquarters-based program departments.
Increase IFAW's public profile and impact in the EU, among lawmakers, institutions, NGOs and in the media.
Ensure that all office activities are integrated and harmonized with IFAW’s international program priorities, as outlined in the organization’s strategic plans.
Ensure the development and coordination of initiatives, programs and campaigns that bring together animal welfare, conservation, political and scientific expertise.
Work closely with IFAW’s fundraising departments to plan targeted outreach activities aimed at increasing the donor pool and cultivating/stewarding existing prospects. Establish links with major donors through direct contact and events.
Ensure the development and maintenance of a fully integrated and collaborative IFAW team that meets all expectations of a country office.
Ensure sound and ethical business practices.
Work closely with appropriate HQ departments to maintain open communication channels and efficient office operations.
Other duties as assigned.
Requirements Commitment to animal welfare and to promoting IFAW’s mission, preferably with experience in the field of animal welfare.
Demonstrated senior leadership and management skills developed from a minimum 5 years at a senior level in a similar capacity.
An advanced degree in law, public policy, or other relevant topic.
Demonstrated knowledge of a second language
Experience with all aspects of management including administration, finance, and human resources.
Strategic vision; background in legislative and regulatory campaigning, project and program management, particularly in an international context.
Proven ability with political strategizing and network building.
Demonstrated communication skills, both verbal and written, including work with the media. High comfort level serving as a spokesperson for the organization.
Excellent organizational skills and team-building experience.
Ability to work independently and on teams with other NGOs and the public.
Proven budget management ability.
