The Hunger Project’s Mission
The Hunger Project is a global, non-profit, strategic organization committed to the sustainable end of world hunger. In Africa, South Asia and Latin America, The Hunger Project seeks to end hunger and poverty by empowering people to lead lives of self-reliance, meet their own basic needs and build better futures for their children.
The Hunger Project carries out its mission through three essential activities: mobilizing village clusters at the grassroots level to build self-reliance, empowering women as key change agents, and forging effective partnerships with local government. Job Summary
The VP of Programs provides strategic leadership and ensures the creation, implementation and integration of programs in alignment with THP’s mission, methodology and strategic direction. The VP of Programs reports to the President/CEO, and works collegially with members of the Leadership Team to move forward THP’s priorities.
The VP of Programs is flexible in approach, is an innovative and strategic thinker and is comfortable working in a multi-cultural, complex and challenging environment.

Leadership
•     Direct the program work of THP, ensuring alignment with THP’s mission and strategy.
•     Empower, and work in partnership with, Country Directors and National Advisory Councils while managing, designing and implementing programs on the ground that further the work and mission of THP.
•     Ensure all program staff understand and implement THP’s methodology, including empowering leaders to conduct workshops and, where necessary, lead workshops personally.
•     Oversee microfinance program activities, ensuring the creation of government-recognized rural banks in each country in Africa, and developing new and innovative microfinance products in response to changing needs.

Monitoring and Evaluation
•     Design and provide oversight for a comprehensive M&E system for all THP programs.
•     Monitor the implementation of programs and projects in line with annual programmatic budget plans and restricted funding requirements, ensuring conditions are met.

Advocacy and Influence
•     Maintain active participation of THP in UN/ NGO partnerships to coordinate possible joint action and THP’s participation in UN/World Bank activities related to hunger and poverty in coordination with VP of Strategy and Influence.
•     Work with Country Directors to seek on-the-ground partnerships with private NGOs and government and also seek opportunities for bilateral and multilateral funding to expand our work.
•     Represent THP with the most senior levels of government, bilateral aid agencies, and multilateral organizations, such as UN, World Bank, etc.

Administrative and Financial Matters
•     With the Country Directors, create each program country’s annual budget within approved guidelines and restricted funding priorities to ensure targets are set, ongoing assessment of development impacts (M&E) is achieved and compliance with grants are met.
•     Review and approve quarterly financial and activity reports to ensure that expenses are consistent with the annual budget and the programmatic activities meet targets.
•     In partnership with Country Directors, and Global Office finance team, participate in annual audits to ensure financial integrity and fiduciary responsibility.
•     Manage the annual Global Office Program department budget.

Qualifications:
•     Advanced degree in appropriate field and/or additional experience/education.
•     At least six (6) years’ progressively responsible experience with design and implementation of rural development programs and projects at the grass roots level.
•     Program experience in international development, specifically poverty and chronic hunger.
•     Proven track record in the successful design and implementation of development programs.
•     Demonstrated commitment to women’s empowerment and people-centered approaches.
•     Excellent oral and written communication skills.
•     Independent and self-motivated.
•     Cultural sensitivity and competency.
•     Ability to travel internationally and work flexible hours.
•     Experience with grants and contract reporting.
•     Experience with budgeting and financial reporting.
•     Familiarity with grass roots business and operational practices in Africa, South Asia and Latin America would be highly regarded.
•     Management experience of a large number of staff in the field across a number of countries.
•     Fluency in English (and French highly preferable.)

Compensation:
•     Salary commensurate with experience.
